FOSTERING BLOG

You Might Surprise Yourself...

Do you have what it takes to become a foster carer? You might already have more than you think.

Foster carers come from all walks of life, but they all share one thing in common – a willingness to care.

The simple answer is no – you do not need specific qualifications to become a foster carer.

What you do need are the life skills, experience and personal qualities that help children feel safe, supported and cared for.

Every day, we meet people who are surprised to learn they might be just what a child in care needs. You may already have the qualities of a great foster carer and not even realise it.

Life Experience Counts

Have you raised your own children? If so, you will know that encouraging, reassuring, setting boundaries and helping them through life’s ups and downs are all invaluable skills.

Do not have children of your own? That is absolutely fine. Perhaps you have helped care for nieces, nephews or grandchildren. Maybe you are the friend everyone turns to for advice, or you have supported others through difficult times.

Foster Carers Come From All Walks of Life

Foster carers are teachers, nurses, office workers, engineers, shop assistants, retired people, couples, single people and people from many different cultures and communities.

What they all have in common is a willingness to make a difference.

We Support You Every Step of the Way

No one arrives as the perfect foster carer. We provide comprehensive training, guidance and ongoing support throughout your fostering journey.

What we cannot teach is kindness, patience and the ability to care about someone else’s future. We are looking for potential – not perfection.

You might have skills from...

  • ✓ Working with children
  • ✓ Supporting vulnerable adults
  • ✓ Volunteering in your community
  • ✓ A job where you stay calm under pressure
  • ✓ Everyday life experiences that build empathy, patience and resilience

The Personal Qualities That Make a Good Foster Carer

Every child is different, and every fostering journey is different. However, there are some personal qualities that can help foster carers provide the right support.

  • Kindness and empathy
  • Patience and emotional resilience
  • The ability to listen without judging
  • A calm approach during difficult moments
  • Commitment to keeping a child safe
  • Willingness to learn and work with professionals
  • A spare bedroom and a stable home environment
